Ready for my first marathon
Submitted by soleman on Fri, 11/14/2008 - 12:28pm.Its Friday before my first marathon (on Sunday) and I feel really good. Its been 6 months since I started, but it seems like the time has flown by. I've definately got anxiety, but feeel well prepared in spite of having a sore back last week.
I was able to get to the chiropractor in enough time to get some good adjustments and recover, while still getting my normal running in.
On the Road Training
Submitted by soleman on Mon, 11/03/2008 - 8:56pm.I've been a little quiet for the last couple weeks. Had a lot on my plate to prepare for the marathon on Nov 16.
After running 16 miles and getting leg cramps, I was concerned and did some more research so I could be prepared for my 18 miler. I thought I was in good shape while I was running my 18 miles, then on mile 15 my legs started cramping again. I kept pushing it, but at mile 17 I hit a wall. I was really bummed, and it affected me since I only had 1 long run left in my schedule and it was a 20 miler and I realized "on the road training" was running out.
take it easy
Submitted by iamrun on Thu, 10/30/2008 - 2:46pm.i had to take it easy this morning- the prospect of being out ther- far- pushing through with tired legs did not seem a viable option- so i lingered in bed an extra half an hour- knowing even then that i would not have daylight to help me find my way. i chose the out and back run along glebe that had become the trademark-slug run, and i just hoped that the time would pass quickly- and it did- though the last protions up hill had my hamstrings complaining. as i predicted-56 minutes. i will likely feel good this evening from the leisure running- at least i can hope.
Combatting the cramps of a long run
Submitted by soleman on Mon, 09/29/2008 - 1:32pm.My long runs are getting longer. This past week I did 16 miles and just about hit a wall. I was feeling pretty good, except my legs cramped up and I just barely finished the 16 mile run.
I've never been flexible, and each week my legs are getting tighter and tighter. I was told I likely have a lactic acid problem and have been doing some research. I just bought and started taking Endurex and Potassium. Hopefully they will both help me. But, what I also found out is that I am likely pushing too hard on my long runs.
Diet, drinking and losing weight
Submitted by soleman on Sun, 09/14/2008 - 7:22pm.As I've been working through the program, I've been getting in better shape, losing inches on my waist, but just not dropping the weight. I've been eating much healthier and feel a lot better.
Running in the Texas Hill Country
Submitted by soleman on Mon, 09/01/2008 - 8:37pm.This was a great run in Sunrise Beach, TX. This is in the Texas hill country and offered plenty of challenges with hills along with some nice scenery.
What was interesting about this run is that I introduced more hills than my normal long run, but everything was going great that I felt really good the whole way through it. I was very encouraged after my run, especially since my last long run was 11 miles and I struggled all the way through it.

Geting Serious - Getting The Right Gear
Submitted by soleman on Thu, 08/28/2008 - 11:06pm.Once I decided I was serious and was actually going to be putting the miles on, I knew I had to get the proper gear. I did some research on what I needed, what was worth spending the money on and what was a treat vs needed.
I chose to get a few new things and went shopping:
- New pair of Mizuno sneakers. The felt good and have been great so far. I also bought quality shorts and shirts. Boy do they make a big difference - anything is better than cotton shirts.
